Question: What is up with this Libertine logo in each book?
We stamp each book with our signature black & white logo. Usually on the title page, but if there is a blank page or endpaper page before that, we tend to go for that (unless, say, there are a ton of pages of reviews, as is sometimes the case). Here are some examples:
Question: Why do you stamp each book, though?
Long Answer: One of our loved one had their own book stamp, and we always loved that. It said "From the Library of" and that loved one's name. Putting your own stamp on a book, or writing your name in it, shows your investment into the magical blocks of paper and creation. Shows your investment in yourself, and things that matter. That is what the Libertine is all about. So we stamp our books with our name because the book is in our hands for a time, before we pass it on to you. These books are dear to us, and in a very digitized world, we'd like to think that anyone seeing the Libertine stamp on their book will feel connected and cared about.
Also, library books used to have physical space in either the front or back of books to stamp their "Due By" dates for patrons. We remember this, and remember that it was interesting to see who had checked the book out before us. So if you happen to gift or pass a Libertine book along, the next owner will know one place their new book has been. That is also why we sell books with inscriptions or names. It is also why we sell withdrawn library books and books that were at book banks (though we do not directly take stock from book banks, ever!).
Question: Doesn't this make the book non-returnable? What IS your return policy?
The stamp doesn't affect our relationship to the book - we are always happy to have Libertine books. Purchases, though, are final unless there has been a considerable misrepresentation of the book. We are a small business, with a focus on alternative economies and selling practices, and operate similarly to a small local used bookstore. In the event of a customer wanting to return a book, we will often offer store credit instead of a return. Our books are sold as-is, but with transparency as to their condition. (Please see our Condition Guide here.)
But if you're hoping to resell Libertine books, the stamp might be a problem. We don't focus on our offerings being for resale, though there are undoubtedly some valuable books in our stock.
Question: So you don't want customers to resell Libertine books?
That's not why we offer what we offer. :) But we can't control what happens after a customer has bought a book or books. We do reserve the right to modify or limit very large purchases. We're not wanting to police customers at all, though. We just want to make it clear we're here for the individual book lover, not the wholesaler. You can also see this in our Legal Terms for the website.
Happy reading, dreaming, and living with books!
